In Committee Jean   met with Garda, a Marketing and Design Company,  together with Roger Savage, Deputy CEO of SAVS to establish a Marketing Strategy for SDPC, the aim being to create a higher profile and expand SDPC membership to the recently retired.  Jodie Bennett will be working on the strategy with Roger and Jean.  Jodie will present her ideas to our next Committee Meeting on the 8th November.

We still await replies from the Southend City Council Leader following our letters to him regarding the need for an Older Person’s Champion, and for news of the future City Travel Centre. We decided to ask our questions at Full Council Meetings, as this will ensure that we receive answers. The September accounts showed a balance of £3,028. 68. Issy reported that Motions to the NPC London Council AGM in March, 2024 should be in by the first week in March

Last Month’s MeetingWe had interesting talks from Lee Bagnall of “Folks Like Us”, Chiquitta of “Community Builders” and Sara  who works with people who suffer from COPD. They are part-funded by the National Lottery, and have a hub within the SAVS building in Alexander Street, Southend. They also have a hub in West Road, Shoebury. They attract local people, 55 yrs. and over, who are lonely and isolated, but are able to travel on their own. Activities include a choir, knitting, craft, a beach hut, an allotment in Norwich Avenue. They provide hot meals in the winter. “Community Builders” work in Shoebury, Victoria and Milton Wards and hope to expand to other areas in due course.

Slipper Swap Project.  Southend City Council are offering older residents the chance to collect brand new slippers designed to reduce the risk of tripping, slipping and falling. They have secure fastenings and robust soles. The events are being held as follows between 10am and noon.
