Southend District Pensioner’s Campaign

 Vice-Chairman’s report: 19th February 2020

We have enjoyed another successful year (our 34th) with new members joining and a stronger committee in place.

As always, we have members who have had health problems and sadly we lost one of our founding members, Iris Balson in August. We attended the funeral service in September, and donated to her families chosen charity. Martin and Ann Tweed are still unable to attend our meetings a year on, but Martin is recovering slowly.

Our Committee is now stronger with the addition of Jill Allen-King OBE and Alan Grubb, and we enjoy good support at our meetings from people who help out with refreshments, raffle prizes and moving furniture.

Following our move to Balmoral Centre, together with our fund raising lunches, our finances are improving. This is despite our membership numbers declining as older people are not renewing as their health declines.  Campaigning is unfortunately reduced as we are unable to find suitable indoor venues in the town for outreach to the community.

We now have Roger Savage from SAVS, working with us on developing a more useful website, and this we hope will attract younger retirees. My thanks to Jean, who works hard keeping us informed of meetings and producing minutes as well as organising the speakers programme. Also, David for his work on keeping the accounts and producing our regular “Digest”.  Margaret is doing a good job running our Lottery.

I will be stepping down as Vice-Chairman this year, but hope to serve on the new Committee. Also, I am happy to continue as a delegate to the London Regional Council Meetings held quarterly.

Thanks to our President, David Norman MBE for his support this year, and to all the Committee and to you for all that you do.

Bob Howes.
